A huge 3 m. high grotesque puppet “punter” dances drunkenly through the streets before exploding in flame. This was a street theatre piece (until the fire department vetoed it), which was then incorporated by the Melbourne Workers’ Theatre into their production Tower of Light for the 2000 Melbourne Festival.
Punter Goes Off was literally inflammatory ! It was devised in 1999 and presented in Brisbane, Abbotsford, and in the Melbourne Workers Theatre Tower of Light at the 1999 Melbourne Festival. Punter was a huge 2.7m puppet (metal, fabric, paper) that emerged from a pile of refuse, followed by a gang of youths. As the puppet began to “dance” the youths chanted “Loser! Burn the loser! Burn the loser!” The puppet catches fire and dies. Stunning.
